The Notre Dame hotel in Jerusalem was built in 1885, sponsored and populated by French pilgrims. Designed according to Abbé Brisacier’s building plan, combining architectural elegance and an Arabesque influence.
Until the First World War, the Notre Dame served as a seminary for future Assumptions. After the Second World War, in 1948, the building was heavily damaged during the regional war. The reconstruction of the Notre Dame hotel was managed by Pope John Paul II who established the Notre Dame reputation as a unique ecumenical holy place.
The guesthouse also serves today as an ecumenical center for Christians around the world, thus promoting the encounter between the local and universal Church.
